On September 8, 2024, Transcrime-UCSC, INVERT coordinator, participated in a roundtable discussion titled ‘Work: from a tool of social emancipation to urban caporalato.’ The event, organised by the Municipality of Milan, aimed to engage and raise awareness among citizens on the sensitive issues of labour exploitation and caporalato (an Italian word referring to the illegal recruitment and employment of workers for very little salaries) in urban contexts. Experts from the academic, legal and political spheres discussed the role of public and private actors in preventing and combating the phenomenon of labour exploitation.
During the event, preliminary results of the INVERT project were shared, in particular regarding the risk indicators developed within the project for the identification of companies potentially involved in cases of labour exploitation, as well as the characteristics of the victims. These results confirm the existence of complex schemes adopted by traffickers to exploit workers, within legal companies and through subcontracting chains, often in connection with other corporate crimes. The discussion also included factors that increase the vulnerability of most victims, who are often trapped in these schemes with little chance of escape.
